ST.
CHARLES — The St. Charles-based Ambassadors of Harmony hope enough love
is in the air this year that they will reach their goal of delivering 300
singing valentines on Friday and Saturday.
"This is a once-a-year event," said Steve Knese of Fenton,
organizer of the effort. "The quartet comes out to the place of work,
home or wherever they want."
Knese is vice president of chapter development.
This will be the 12th year for the fund-raiser, said member Ken Schroder.
Potential customers may call (636) 225-9646 or can go to valentines@aoh.org,
Knese said.
For $50 a customer receives two songs, a small box of candy, a rose and a
greeting card, Knese said. The songs are longtime barbershop-singing
favorites, "Heart of My Heart" and "Let Me Call You
Sweetheart."
"Sometimes, we pull others out of our hat," said Michael Kunz of
Maplewood, who plans to be a member of one of the quartets. "This
year, we learned 'I Love You Truly.'"
Kunz said "I Love You Truly" was the song Bert and Ernie sang to
George and Mary Bailey on their wedding night in the movie "It's A
Wonderful Life." This year would be his seventh time to deliver
singing valentines, Kunz said.
Last year, when Valentine's Day fell on a weekday, the group delivered 215
orders, Knese said.
"The guys that do it take the day off," said Hal Maples, vice
president of public relations and marketing. Some of the quartets
delivered as many as 25 singing telegrams a day, he said.
"We have a really good time doing it and the recipients have a good
time, too," Maples said.
